In the Rutgers online BABA program, we cover various topics in business law. You will learn basic concepts of contract law, employment discrimination, human resource law, tort negligence and a little bit of criminal law.

Interaction is very important for online students. They don’t want to feel that they’re missing that interaction that they would in a brick and mortar class. We have weekly discussions where students get to interact with each other and, most importantly, professor Aziz.

Here at the Rutgers online course we’re giving you an opportunity to learn and to be able to apply principles that you learn in the class to your everyday setting in your everyday life.

MaiSha: In my online course students will learn basic legal concepts that they will be able to apply in their daily life in entering any business field. We cover various topics in business law. Now the first thing I tell my students is: “I am an attorney but this is not law school. Don’t get excited. Don’t tell people after you finish this course that you are an attorney.” But you will learn basic concepts of contract law, employment discrimination, human resource law, tort negligence and a little bit of criminal law. And contract is so important for every individual who is entering any business field. Not having a good contract or written agreement with pertinent terms is almost the downfall of every small business.

It’s very important for every student, once they enroll, to read the course syllabus which is in the tab in the program and to look at the course calendar. There is something due every single week specifically in business law, every week. You have to look at the course calendar and see how you can integrate the course calendar into your personal life calendar. There is a lot of reading that you have to understand, grasp and analyze. You have to be organized, you have to be focused and you have to be dedicated. So you have to set aside the time. The good thing is it’s an online course so you can read on the beach, you can read at home, you can read in between your breaks at work but you have to set aside the time to read. Do your assignments on time. Do your assignments well. Make sure there’s no spelling errors or grammatical errors. Make sure you take your exams on time and make sure you interact with the students and with the professor and you should do well.

Interaction is very important for online students. They don’t want to feel that they’re missing that interaction that they would in a brick and mortar class. We have weekly discussions where students get to interact with each other and, most importantly, me. We talk about hot topics. We talk about trade infringement law that’s going on with Singers and football players with their contracts – things that get the students involved. In terms of contacting me or having any interaction with me, they can send me a private message through the online course, they can e-mail me, they can, uh, instant message me and they can also video message me. I’ve had video message chats with my students. It makes them feel that they’ve actually seen me and they can have a conversation with their professor.

In this teaching experience it is a two-way street. I am able to teach the students things that they didn’t know about and sometimes they are able to teach me things, or bring things to my attention that they didn’t know about. And how that comes about is real life. Really with the online course most of the time you have people who are working so what they’ll say is that we’re dealing with something with discrimination, for instance. They’ll say: “This happened at work today. What do you think, professor? How does what we learned in this chapter apply to the incident at work?” And it’s really those interactions where they’re drawing from their everyday life that really makes the learning experience a great one.

As a Rutgers alum – a third generation Rutgers alum and a faculty member, I love the Rutgers University and I love the Rutgers online course. The Rutgers online course provides an opportunity to students who may not have the physical time to go into a brick and mortar class but has the aptitude to obtain a Bachelor’s degree. And those are the people that we want to reach out. Sometimes those students are the most dedicated and most hard working. They are obtaining something that they truly and heart-fully want so we want to give it to them. So here at the Rutgers online course we’re giving you an opportunity to learn and to be able to apply principles that you learn in the class to your everyday setting in your everyday life.
