Online Programs vs. Individual Online Courses

Fully online degree programs offer a comprehensive educational experience where all required courses are completed remotely. These programs are designed for students seeking to earn their ENTIRE degree online without coming to campus. In contrast, individual online courses are single classes that can be taken by any student, regardless of whether they're enrolled in a traditional on-campus program or a fully online program. Often, there are traditional in-person courses with fully online sections available. Taking individual fully online courses does not change your status as degree seeking student in a traditional on-campus program.

Finding Individual Online Courses

If you're a current Rutgers student interested in taking individual online courses as part of your traditional program, you can find available options in the University Schedule of Classes. Check the box for "Online and Remote Instruction Courses" for your respective campus.

Your advisor can provide guidance on how these online courses may impact your overall academic plan and help you make informed decisions about incorporating them into your schedule.

Changing Your Learning Modality at Rutgers

If you're considering a switch between a traditional face-to-face and fully online degree program at Rutgers, it's important to understand the process and implications. Your first step should be to consult with your academic advisor at your current school. They can inform you about equivalent online programs available and guide you through the necessary steps for transition.

Be aware that some online programs may be offered by different schools within Rutgers, potentially requiring a change in your school affiliation. Changing modalities can impact your tuition and fees, as online and on-campus programs may have different cost structures. Additionally, switching from face-to-face to online learning may affect your eligibility for on-campus housing and access to certain campus resources like the recreation center. Students in fully online programs are exempt from vaccination and health insurance requirements. However, if you later switch back to face-to-face learning, you'll need to comply with these policies. Your advisor can provide comprehensive information about how this change might impact your academic journey, financial aid, tuition and fees, and campus life experience, ensuring you make an informed decision about your educational path at Rutgers.
